Known issues and differences
JetRift is in early access. It starts servers in about a second, but it does not yet match everything you get from a standard Minecraft server. This page lists what is different today, so you are not surprised. It changes as things improve. If you hit something that is not listed here, please report it, it takes a minute.
Can't connect? Version and join problems
Most connection problems have a simple cause. Find the message you see in Minecraft below. If none of this helps, press Report a bug and include what you saw.
Which Minecraft version do I need?
You need Minecraft: Java Edition on a computer, running exactly the version shown on your server page (the Server tab and the Software tab both say, for example, “Minecraft Java Edition 26.3”). The engine version, such as Pumpkin 0.2.0, is a different number and is not what you pick in the Minecraft launcher. In the Minecraft Launcher open Installations, create one with that release, start it, then join. Bedrock Edition (phones, consoles, Windows 10 edition) can not join.
“Outdated client” or “Outdated server”
- Outdated client means your game is older than the server. Update or pick the version the server page shows.
- Outdated server means your game is newer than the server. Pick the older release the server page shows in the launcher, or ask the owner to update the server in the Software tab.
- If the owner turned on automatic updates, the required version can change after an update. Check the server page again.
“You are not whitelisted on this server”
The owner turned the whitelist on, so only listed players can join. Tell the owner your exact Minecraft name. They add it in Players → Whitelist, or with one click under Tried to join, where your name will already be waiting.
“You are banned from this server”
The owner banned your name or your internet address. Only the owner can lift it, so ask them. If you share an internet connection with a banned player (for example a school, dorm or family), an IP ban can block you too.
“The server is full”
The server has reached its player limit (up to 20). Wait for someone to leave, or ask the owner to raise the limit under Options → Player limit.
Why do I land in a lobby first?
You connect to JetRift first, and JetRift moves you to the right server as soon as it is awake. This move is called a transfer, and it needs a recent client: Minecraft 1.20.5 or newer. If the transfer fails you are sent back with a message, so update your game and try again.
Why does it take a few seconds to join?
Servers go idle when nobody is on, to save power. The first player after that starts the server again, which takes a few seconds. Everyone after that joins instantly. If it is turned off in the dashboard, nobody can wake it until the owner turns it on, and the owner can also limit who may wake it (Options → Wake rules).
School, work or public networks and VPNs
Some networks block game traffic. If the connection times out, try another network such as mobile data, or ask the network administrator. A VPN can slow the connection or get blocked, so try with it off. The address uses the normal Minecraft port, so no extra setup is needed on your side.
Cracked and offline accounts
JetRift only accepts real Minecraft accounts that sign in through Mojang. Cracked, offline and launcher-less accounts can not join and there is no setting to allow them.
How JetRift is different
- The server software is Pumpkin, an open-source Minecraft server written in Rust, not the original Mojang server. It is fast and light, but it is still under development: mob behaviour, redstone, some commands, structures and other details can differ from vanilla Minecraft, and a few things are missing.
- Java Edition only. Bedrock (phones, consoles, Windows 10 edition) is not supported.
- Online-mode only. Every player needs a paid Java account and signs in through Mojang. Cracked or offline servers do not work, and there is no way to turn that off.
- You join through a short lobby. You connect to JetRift, sign in once in a small empty lobby, and are moved to your server as soon as it is awake. This needs a recent client: Minecraft 1.20.5 or newer. Older versions cannot follow the move.
- The server goes idle after 2 minutes with nobody on it and starts again when someone joins. The first player after that waits a few seconds; after that it is instant.
- Game modes: Survival, Creative and Spectator. There is no Adventure mode.
- Up to 20 players per server and 3 servers per account in this early version. When the machine is busy, a server that uses far more processor than its fair share is slowed down so everybody gets a fair turn.
Options that do not exist
Some switches from other hosts are not offered because the server software does not support them yet: turning structures on or off, command blocks and allow flight. Other world-generation presets may also be ignored.
Not available yet
- Plugins and mods. Nothing can be installed yet.
- Backups: each world can keep up to 3 backups in your own Google Drive, plus one automatic daily backup that replaces the previous one. Restoring puts the world back and switches the server off until it is done; it never changes your settings, whitelist or operators. More frequent automatic backups may come later.
- Resource packs work only if the file is reachable on the internet and the player accepts it.
- Bedrock cross-play, voice chat and Discord links are not available.
Sharing a server
You can invite other JetRift accounts by email and choose what they may do (see the Access tab). Only you, the owner, can delete, reset, rename or share a server. Invitations are accepted by the person signing in with the invited Google address.
If something breaks
- Use the Report a bug button at the bottom right of every page, or email [email protected].
- Tell us what you did, what you expected and what happened. Ticking "include technical details" attaches the page, your browser and the server status, which usually lets us fix it much faster.
- If your world is affected, do not delete the server. We may be able to recover it.
